Jump for Josie

At just two and a half, Josie found her love of and confidence in swimming through a survival swim course. To pass, Josie jumped into the water fully clothed and made her way to the wall by alternating between swimming with her head in the water and rolling to her back to breathe.

At three, Josie and her brother (four years older) quickly took to the deep end of Fry's Spring Beach Club (FSBC) for uninhibited jumps and swimming. People looked twice when they saw a three year old without floaties keeping up with her eight year old brother and his friends.

At four, Josie was doing cannonballs off of diving boards.

A favorite memory is how Josie would get extra excited whenever her best friend showed up to Fry’s pool. Her friend was getting comfortable being in the water and had worked his way up to floating by the edge of the shallow pool, with water wings on. Josie was thrilled to finally have a swim friend, and she showed it the best way she knew how, by doing her patented belly-first, arms out, fearless dive-bomb into the water, right next to him. Each time it sent a wave of water that forced her friend to hold his breath, and Josie did it over, and over, and over, always yelling “Watch this, Kaleo!” She approached the pool the same way she approached life.

On July 4, 2024, Fry’s Spring Beach Club welcomed everyone to the deep end for the  first-annual Jump for Josie Belly Flop Competition. As a tribute to Josie’s reckless abandon, joy for living, and love of a good belly flop, the FSBC community honored Josie by doing something she loved dearly: laying it all on the line in an impromptu belly flop contest.
